The Glen Rosa Horseshoe Hill Race on the Isle of Arran is a serious challenge for experience runners only. The route is 12 miles long and involves 5,500 feet of ascent. Very little of the course is marked, and competitors must be able to navigate using map and compass. Experience has shown that much of the race can take place in cloud, with very limited visibility. Competitors must be 21 or older on the day of the race. The Glen Rosa Horseshoe Race is a Scottish Athletics permit event. Basic facilities are provided at the start / finish, which is located at the Ranger Centre behind Brodick Castle. Competitors travelling to Arran on the day will need to catch the 0700 or 0945 ferry from Ardrossan, and can return on the 1640 or 1920 ferry. Contact www.calmac.co.uk for more information. All runners will be required to carry waterproof jacket and trousers, whatever the weather conditions, plus a whistle, compass, map (1:50,000 or better) and emergency food equivalent to at last 2oz chocolate. There will be a kit check – no kit, no race, no kidding! Emergency cover will be provided on the hills by the Isle of Arran Mountain Rescue Team. Much of the race takes place on steep, rocky ground. There is a real possibility of serious injury. Do not take part if you are not confident of your ability to race over this type of ground. Several of the checkpoints have cut-off times. You will not be allowed to continue the race if you fail to make a cut-off. You will be directed back to the finish by the marshals. The organisers reserve the right to postpone or cancel the race, to run an alternative, bad weather course, and to refuse entry. The organisers’ decision on any matter concerning the race is final.
